In anticipation of Pride 2018, we've decided to release a special t-shirt that revitalises the classic LGBTQ rainbow. Inspired by the Philadelphia More Color More Pride campaign, our rainbow brandishes additional stripes in black and brown. Though the community united under the original flag are meant to champion LGBTQ rights, homonormativity has also been grounds for its own kind of violence, prejudice and divisiveness. The widened spectrum of our rainbow hopes to bring into visibility a major LGBTQ blindspot: of those who often feel erased or underrepresented by mainstream Pride. This is in spirit of the Cockheart Family ethos, one built around genuine unity, solidarity, and celebration of diversity. We cannot only celebrate our freedom to love while knowing many of our queer siblings still must fight to live.
We’re not saying we shouldn’t celebrate (you know us better than that!), we just think that everyone should have the right to celebrate themselves without fearing discrimination or harassment.
That’s why last year we donated 5 pounds from each tee to Pxssy Palace´s taxi fund, for trans feminine folx of colour to get home safe after their club nights. Because the reality is that QTIPOCs are more likely to be targets of hate crime. However, even within our own Pride celebrations, we've failed to make our trans siblings feel welcome, despite the fact that trans women were amongst those we can thank for the Stonewall Riots of 1969, which was the beginning of Pride as we know it. At London Pride last year, a group of lesbians staged a protest against the inclusion of trans people, with banners reading “Transactivism erases lesbians”. The organisers of London Pride failed to adequately defend the rights of trans people to participate. While this episode is not representative of the Pride community, it touches upon the continuing issue of equality and inclusivity for trans people, who are still denied the safe space we must all be committed to creating. For us this means we have to put our money where our mouth is: this year we have decided to put 5 pounds per tee towards supporting the first ever London Trans + Intersex Pride, taking place on 14th September 2019.
